Jr High Girls win semifinal softball! Oct 24
The Pinewood Junior High Girls Softball team won their semifinal game on Thursday, October 23rd vs. St. Simon's 22 to 0!

World Series-worthy performances were delivered by pitcher Abby Cilker, allowing only two baserunners (one walk and one single) and facing only one more than the minimum eighteen batters, on fewer than 75 pitches in six complete innings. Owing to the excellent defense, the only hitter was tagged-out on a text-book double play: Mika Chan played great second base, scooping a grounder and throwing to Maddie Fraioli at first, who then threw a perfect strike to Alexis Wise at third, who tagged the runner coming in.

Momentum on defense lead to performance at the plate: Maddie Fraioli delivered at least three key hits and brought home at least 5 runs. Lead-off batter Alexis Wise scored four times, on three walks and a two-run single. Brittany Shaw caught the entire game, including at least three foul tips strike outs. Clean up hitter Ilana Finer delivered hits twice with bases loaded and perfect throws to first from shortstop. Outfielders caught every ball hit to them and added hits, stolen bases, and runs, as the Panthers batted around in two separate innnings.

Jr. High Girls Softball Wins SJCAL Varsity B Championship! Nov 2
Pinewood’s Jr. High Girls Softball team won the championship game Friday, October 24, defeating Menlo School solidly 14-8, leading by eleven runs after the scheduled game time elapsed. The entire team celebrated a 5 win, 2 loss season, including a perfect record in the two-game championship after a 70 pitch, nineteen batter, one-hit shutout the previous night by ace right-hander Abby Cilker.

Visiting Pinewood’s offense continued the trend from the previous game, with outstanding hitting and notably more aggressive base running in Friday’s game, scoring the first three batters leading to an early 5 1 lead after three innings, stretched to 9-2 after four. The youthful Panthers hustled from the start, with lead-off hitter Alexis Wise hitting a sharp single to left field followed by a perfect sacrifice bunt down the third base line, which winning pitcher Cilker beat out. By the time the ball got back to the pitcher, Wise was on third, with Cilker stealing second on the next pitch. Katie Mo hit a sharp grounder to the right side of the infield, reaching on an error and bringing the first two runs home. Menlo’s outfield saw plenty of action all game, with third-baseman Alexis Wise hitting 4 for 4, reaching base 5 times, and scoring thrice on leadoff outfield hits; Abby Cilker batting 4 for 5, with four to the outfield; Brittany Shaw 2 for 2 with two runs scored and the longest Panther hit of the year; Shasha Chattamanokul knocking clutch singles in three trips to the plate with runners on base, and Sweta Ghosh delivering two singles and a double. Almost every batter reached base: Mika Chan hit two singles, Pauline Slakey, Katie Mo, Lindsay Elsey, Delna Godrej, and Rosalind Vaughan all singled, and Maddy Fraioli took two walks and scored in the second inning, following her 3-for-3 performance the previous game with a single, double, triple and walk, scoring two runs and bringing home six teammates, over a third of the team’s output.

Defensively, after three quick Pinewood runs, shortstop Ilana Finer kept momentum on the first pitch with a beautiful stab of a low line drive to her right that had “double” written on the seams. Pitcher Cilker kept Menlo’s hits on the ground, and provided exercise for second-basewoman Mika Chan, both in throws to first and assists on grounders at second. Maddy Fraioli continued her strong performance at first, with four putouts in the last three innings supported by 3 Cilker strikeouts.

The Panthers practiced hard almost daily, and earned the joy of championship, as displayed on Guilia Siccardo’s face, as she crossed home plate with the last Pinewood run in the fifth inning, just as she had in Pinewood’s earlier 10-5 victory over Menlo for the last regular season contest nine days earlier.

Coaches Michele Tabarez and Catherine Tipps were very pleased with how the season ended. The girls worked hard everyday at practice and improved their skills and techniques with each game played.

Upper Campus Admission Open House Nov. 15
The Upper Campus Open House will be Saturday November 15th, from 11 am-1:30 pm. You are invited to bring any friends who are looking at options for junior high or high school.
The event will include sessions on general school information, college counseling, campus tours, teaching demonstrations, athletics, student life, and panel discussions featuring current parents, students, and recent alumni. Throughout the day we will showcase student artwork, projects, and musical performances. Although all current Pinewood students do not have to complete the admission process when moving up from the sixth or eighth grades, as is required of all other incoming students, this is a wonderful opportunity to find out a little more about the benefits and opportunities available at the Upper Campus. We also encourage you to pass this information on to friends who may be exploring options for junior high and high school.
