Pinewood Singers, Best Overall Choir, Apr 28

Congratulations to the Pinewood Singers, who won the Best Overall Choir trophy at the Music In The Parks Festival this weekend at Disneyland. The Pinewood Singers earned the festival's only perfect score from the judges and the highest rating--Superior--in every ratings category. Pinewood was the only small high school at the festival, and faced some stiff competition--in fact, four other choirs also received an overall rating of Superior to compete with Pinewood for the Overall trophy. Come into the office at Break or Lunch to look at the two trophies the Pinewood Singers won at the festival. On Sunday morning, the Singers performed to a standing ovation at the First Congregational Church in Anaheim. The pastor postponed his sermon until the following week to give the Singers a full half hour to perform, and the congregation collected money to send the Pinewood Singers to help them get started raising funds to return and sing at the church next year! Congratulations to the Pinewood Singers for all their hard work and dedication.

Golf Team Beats Harker, Wins League, Apr 24

The Pinewood Golf team defeated Harker 162-177 at San Jose Muni yesterday with our
best team total of the year. Harker played well and about to the level that the
team expected, but our players thanks to our practice round and mental preparation
played a very inspired team outing. Here is a quick wrap up of some of the
outstanding performances. Mike Dorchak shot the low round of the season a one under
par 35 which included 4 birdies, Heath Ocampo shot a steady 40 in which he could not
make a putt, Makoto Murakami shot a solid 42, and Jo Yang had a career best 45. Jo
Yang's round included a birdie on hole #1 after an errant drive to the left and he
played a very solid round.

The Coach, Jim Miller, extremely proud of the dedication his team has shown so far
this season even though they had a rough start they fought back to finish 5-1 in the
PSAL.

8th grade class trip - Wash D.C., Apr 8

Eighth Grade Trip To Washington D.C.

During the days leading up to Washington D.C., there was a sort of anxiety within everyone who was involved with the eighth grade class trip. It was either a parent worrying about the issue of safety while their child stayed at the nation's capital, or a person who just could not wait to jump on the plane to D.C. After the eighth graders arrived in the airport in Washington D.C., everyone was excited to experience the complete effect that the city would have on them. The first day consisted mainly of visiting historic sights such as the Jefferson Memorial. From there, the group departed to the hotel where they settled into their rooms that they would be sharing with their roommates for four more nights. Throughout the next days, the students ventured into yet even more fascinating places such as the capital building, and the Lincoln Memorial. Getting a break from the historical points of the city, the class got to race Go Karts amongst each other as well as take part in a dance cruise that included a dinner and lasted for three hours. The bus ride back to the upper campus was a reluctant one for the students who did not want to give up their well deserved free time away from home. However, Every student had a desire, large or small, to get a full night sleep in his or her own bed.

Junior High Girls' Basketball (B) - Season Summary, Mar 18

The B team started to peak at the right time of year, just before the tournament. We won four of our last six games and the sixth game was a double overtime loss to Castilleja, a team we had beaten by 19 earlier in the season. We were all disappointed for losing the final game, however nobody loses a game when it goes into double overtime.

We were lead throughout the season by the ballhandling of Alex Spirtos and the scoring of Mika Chen and Maddy Fraioli. Our rebounding was a strength in the end of the season with Mithya Srinivasan, Kelly Hill, and Brittney Shaw all taking control of the boards. Our reserves were a key to our victories in the end coming in for important steals, or just plain tight defense. Abby Cilker, Katie Mo, and Sweta Ghosh all improved tremendously at the end of the year.

Congratulations B team on a successful season.

-Coach Campbell

JH Girls Basketball Tournament, B team results, Mar 17

The B team reached the final game, playing against Castilleja. After
having gotten our first victory of the season against Castilleja, we were a little
cocky going into the game and were forced to battle back from a 15 point
deficit in the 4th quarter. With 3 minutes left, we took them to double
overtime to lose by 2. It was a great game. They were playing a zone on us
except for one girl who was playing man to man defense on Mika Chan who
still managed to lead our team in scoring throughout the tournament and in
that game.

Please congratulate them all for playing well.

8th grade play - The Odyssey, Feb 3

On January 31st, the Eighth graders who were participating in the play, "THE ODYSSEY", came to school with a small sense of nervousness. At about 10:15 a.m. the Eighth graders in the play changed into their costumes and rushed into the theater to make the last minute preparations before the other junior high students viewed the play.

The play production went smoothly with very few miscues. The audience contributed a positive atmosphere to the theater, thus making the play even more spectacular. Once, the play was finished, the students who took part in the play went out the back door of the theater, to have their friends there, congratulating them even before they exited the theater.
As the actors and actresses changed out of their vivid costumes they had a sense of awareness of the play that they would give that night for their parents, and some realized that they would soon be giving their final play as a Pinewood student.

That very night the parents drove their children to the theatre and the students, once again, motivated themselves and prepared to give the play. This time the play went perfectly with Stanley Huang leading the cast as Odysseus. Stacey Balter, Ellen Lathrop, and Lauren Shaw hit every note of their song, as the Sirens, and stunned the crowd.

This play going experience turned out to be a hit for all who saw the play as well as the actors and actresses who participated in it.
