JH Boys Basketball, White team, season final tournament, Jan 20
We had an exciting and challenging weekend playing in the Upper/Gold Bracket of the Varsity B SPCAL Tournament. We lost our first game to the undefeated/first place team from the North Division, Menlo #4 team who had two 8th grade boys well over 6'2" and 200 pounds. We got the margin under 10 points in the 3rd quarter but they were just too big and strong for us. The Pinewood boys never gave up. Evan and Connor each drew 3 fouls in the first quarter so it was an uphill battle the entire way. We won our second game on Saturday against the 3rd place, 9-2, St. Nicholas #1 team also from the North Division. They also had a 8th grade, 6'3" big man that we managed to foul out of the game in the third quarter. We played extremely well as a team this day with Connor and Evan leading us all the way but everyone contributed and played in the victory. We played our last game Sunday against the 3rd place, 7-4, South Division, St. Nicholas #2 team that we had defeated during the regular season in overtime. They had us down by 22 points in the 3rd quarter but behind Evan, Connor, Sam and Darius we roared back to close the gap to 4 points as time just ran out on us. An amazing effort against another bigger, stronger 8th grade dominated team.
So the net on the tournament is that we finished in 6th place overall in the Upper/Gold Bracket. The four Varsity B Menlo teams finished 1 through 4 and I am not sure of the final order. The Pinewood White team came in 4th place in the South Division which had a total of 12 teams, many of which were dominated by 8th graders. If you consider that the North Division had 11 teams and we played in the Upper/Gold Bracket of the tournament which included all of the teams from both divisions, my conclusion/message to the boys and their parents was that we finished in 6th place overall out of a total of 23 teams!! Not bad for an all 7th grade team of 9 players that never played together before this season and with no one player standing over 5'10" tall. Not too bad at all, in fact pretty amazing!!!!!!
I could not be prouder of these boys unwavering effort, dedication, class, never say die against any level of competition and the final outcome they achieved. These boys represented Pinewood School like you can not believe and hopefully served some notice that next year we'll be right back in the thick of it, this time fighting for the championship with hopefully, a more level playing field.

Swim meet at Harker, Mar 7
Pinewood swimmers just attended their first swim meet at Harker on March 2. Junior Matt Harter won his events in 100 fly and 50 free. Freshman Derek Lim won his in 200 free and 100 back. Sophomore Rachel Dawes made her début in 500 free and did great! Junior Daniel Watson swam the most inspiring muscle-man 50 free, and senior Balint Szoke made it through the 100 breast. Great effort! Everyone was having so much fun that junior Andrew Mathews, who wasn’t going to swim because of his ear-infection, managed to fit into Derek’s two-sizes-too-small swimsuit and swam in the boys’ 200 free relay. Guess what, our boys’ relay team of members Andrew, Daniel, Derek & Matt beat the other teams by two lengths of a pool! Way to go, Pinewood swimmers!
Girls Basketball - Pinewood wins CCS Division V!! Mar 6
In a game which Pinewood led from the beginning, we saw air tight defense from both teams. The first quarter ended with a score of Pinewood 4, Sacred Heart Prep 2! Halftime came with Pinewood ahead by 9, but just 14 vs 5 points on the board! Sacred Heart Prep worked hard to shut down Pinewood's three point shot, with defenders constantly at the 3 point line. Fortunately Pinewood could still play an inside game, with post moves and some drives getting through. For its part Pinewood defense focused on the inside, leaving options for 3 pt attempts, rarely taken by Sacred Heart, but really stopping the Sacred Heart drives. In the critical 3rd quarter, Pinewood saw their lead diminish to 6 points. The fourth quarter saw Pinewood confidence high, while Sacred Heart seemed to lose strength. This despite Pinewood running the entire game with no substitutions. The game ended with Pinewood 31 to Sacred Heart's 21. See photo coverage here! Go Panthers!

This was the best and most exciting game of the season. It came down to the wire in the bottom of the 7th inning with two outs and their man on second and third. The pitch is thrown by Darius McClelland. Jerry Rice Jr hits to right field, Mason Guild fields the ball all the way from deep center field, throws to the cut off man (Darius) and in turn throws to home plate. Austin O'such blocks the plate and makes a beautiful catch to throw out the tieing run. What a nail bitter it was. Come support the Panthers at their next game against St. Joseph Mt. View, Sunday May 2nd 10:00am at Saint Francis.

On Friday Apr 29, at the league championships, we had best times by Derek Lim in the 100 free and Rachel Dawes in the 500 free. The boys came in first in the 200 medley relay and we placed 1st (Derek Lim) and 2nd (Matt Harter) in the 100 free. Matt Harter placed first in the 100 fly. It was a difficult meet because of the heat and the pool water was very warm. They all had some great times at the beginning of the meet, but tired out towards the end...
So that leaves us with Matt Harter for CCS and he will be swimming the 100 fly and 500 free.
