Winter Formal on Sat Jan 8
The annual high school Winter Formal Boat Cruise is THIS SATURDAY! All students are required to take the buses. The buses will depart at 5:30. THOU SHALT NOT BE LATE!!! Tickets are still on sale all week long for $55. Remember to also pick your appointment for photos and pick up a price list. Guest forms are also available in the front office and are due to Mr. Schiechl by Friday.

Attention guys going to formal...Need to rent a tux?? Tired of having to make three trips to the store and then having to pay over $100? Well the Student Council has a special deal for you. TOMORROW after school, we will have a tux company RIGHT HERE ON CAMPUS taking measurements and orders for your tux. They have over 85 different tux designs to choose from, and an inventory of over 14,000 jackets! And even better, they will deliver the tux to school on Friday before formal, and after the dance you just bring it back to school on Monday and they will pick it up. BUT WAIT!! THERE'S MORE!! The cost of renting the tux will only be about $65! Yes, only $65!! That is a saving of $45 over what most tuxes cost to rent! This company is a wholesaler that rents tuxedos to the stores that you usually rent from, like New Things West, so by renting from them, you are cutting out the middle man. And a percentage of the cost goes back to the student council to help lower the cost of events like the formal and prom. So remember, don't go renting tuxes during break...do it all right here at Pinewood!! See Mr. Schiechl if you have questions.

Pinewood girls basketball wins Norcal!!! Mar 12
Pinewood girls basketball won their first Norcal title since 1999, decisively defeating Forest Lake Christian, the defending state champions, 60-40!! See photo coverage here.
Photos courtesy Rachel Altmaier.
The girls played awesome, with terrific defense and rebounding, and, with Forest Lake focused on stopping the drives, won on perimeter and post offense, and perfect free throw shooting in the home stretch, with several timely drives getting through as well.
The Panther Pit rocked, and cheered their team on to victory, hugely outnumbering the Forest Lake student fans.
By 5 minutes into the first quarter, Pinewood had established a lead from which Forest Lake would never see daylight again. Pinewood led by 6 points at the end of the first quarter, and closed the half up by 12. Forest Lake made a come-back push in the 3rd quarter, closing to within 6 points in the final seconds. A last Pinewood bucket exited 3rd quarter retaining an 8 point lead. In the fourth quarter, Pinewood saw a more desperate Forest Lake, who just could not seem to hit the hoop. Fouling Pinewood to get a turnover didn't prove a good strategy, as Pinewood made every freethrow.

Perspective on Girls' Basketball
Pinewood sixth grader Marco Siccardo submitted the following piece after watching the girls' basketball team in the playoffs.

When I arrived at Arco Arena I rushed to the entrance to join the screaming fans. I took a quick glance at the score: PINEWOOD WAS IN THE LEAD!
It is not easy to keep the lead in every game. I thought to myself how do they do it? The Pinewood Girls Varsity Basketball team always works together which many teams do not do. In fact, I noticed that when the players are substituted in they are accepted immediately by their teammates and they work well together. Pinewood’s players all know what to do and have no problem communicating with one another during the game.
Pinewood is also a very well trained team and that is all thanks to their great coach. What keeps the Pinewood’s team ahead is their perseverance to go on with the game. If they are losing or someone misses a shot they do not get angry at each other. They are capable to bounce the score back up and win!
Watching the team playing has taught me that working together and passing the ball without excluding anyone make the team strong. Unity, hard work, and perseverance are the qualities that have caused the Pinewood Girls Varsity Basketball team to achieve their victory in the State Championship!
-Marco Siccardo
