Pinewood JV Spikers grab second place tournament trophy , Sept 11, 2006

Pinewood High School's Girls' JV Volleyball team grabbed a second-place trophy Saturday afternoon, September 16th, almost pulling off a complete upset in the Annual Mountain View High School Invitational Tournament.
Coming into the tournament seeded last, Pinewood defeated last year's champion, Mountain View High School, in two games. Pinewood then posted another two-game victory against Lynbrook High.
These energetic, very defensive, and now red-hot Panthers, then won their first match in the Gold Bracket, defeating Monta Vista in two games, thereby earning the right to play for first against the Palo Alto High Vikings.
The tall Vikings snapped the Panther streak at eight, and won the first game despite renewed momentum near the end of the game. The Panthers rallied to win the second game, leading to the Panther's first tie breaker of the 2006 season. Third games are played to fifteen points, while the two regular games are played to 25. And the third game demonstrated why the teams deserved to play the championship game. The Vikings' repeated attack drew quick and responsive defense by the agile Panthers, in extremely long and exciting rallies. The score bounced, with both teams staying within one point through the rubber game of the match. Pinewood pulled ahead and the scoreboard read 14-13, with Pinewood serving again, when the head ref recalled the last point on a net violation, giving the Vikings the point and the 14-13 serve, allowing them to squeeze out the 15-13 victory in a most exciting match, about seven-and-a -half hours after their first game that morning. Well-deserved trophies were presented to both champions.

Pinewood defeated Burlingame Wed evening Jan 3, playing strong from start to finish. PW defense was strong and Burlingame just couldn't get into the basket. Even outside shots were getting blocked. PW pulled off some tricky backdoor plays as well, very surprising this early in the season. Pinewood ended the first quarter up by 9, 19 to 10. Halftime saw the lead go to 12, 36 to 24. In 3rd quarter Pinewood pulled ahead another 3. In the final quarter PW gained by 1. Final score 65 to 49. See photo coverage here.

Pinewood played La Jolla Country Day tonight, with the memory of last years defeat in the Pinewood gym still fresh in their minds. Country Day came in from a win the day before over Sacred Heart Cathedral. The game was intense and hard fought, with Country Day defending vigorously and closely. However Pinewood did not allow a disruption of their offense and took an early lead, using 3 point shooting to good effect. Pinewood defense was intense in itself, holding Country Day to 4 points in the first quarter, closing the 1st quarter with Pinewood up by 6, at 10 to 4.
The second quarter was closer, but Pinewood still gained 4, to end the first half at Pinewood 24 to Country Day 14.
As usual the third quarter was a critical momentum quarter, and Country Day fought back, outscoring Pinewood 15 to 8 in the quarter, ending with Pinewood up by 3, 32 to 29.
Pinewood gave no quarter in the final stanza. Despite increased intensity on both sides, and unusual ref calls, Pinewood outscored their opponent again, 11 to 9, yielding a final result of Pinewood 43, Country Day 38.
Congratulations Panthers!

Pinewood played Clovis West tonight, requiring triple overtime to finally prevail! The first half was not the best for the Panthers, being stopped by Clovis West defenses, and missing too many shots. Pinewood scored but 5 points in the second quarter. Halftime saw the Panthers trailing by 12 points, 19 to 31. Things looked dim. However halftime re-energized the team, and 3rd quarter recovered to trail by 6, Pinewood 35 to Clovis 41. Fourth quarter saw a burst of energy, with Pinewood scoring 16 to Clovis 10, resulting in a tie! The Panthers played without substitution up to this point, where Gracie fouled out.
Overtime 1 saw both teams gain 3 points, tieing at 54 to 54. Overtime 2 saw a burst of scoring, both teams doing 9 more, tieing at 63 to 63. Overtime 3 broke the gates, with Pinewood shooting 12 points; some on freethrows to induce a turnover. Final score: Pinewood 75 to Clovis West 69.

Pinewood boys won the 1st round of CCS playoffs against St. Francis CCC on Feb 21. In the quarter final game, Pinewood gave the number 1 seed Woodside Priory a real scare, leading for much of the fourth quarter. Some mis-steps in the final minutes of play allowed Woodside to come within 3 points, and their player on the freethrow line. Down by 2, and with one freethrow remaining, Woodside took an unusual gamble and bounced the freethrow off the rim, and a Woodside player tipped it back in for 2, ending four quarters in a tie. In overtime, Pinewood could not hold on, and ended their season. Congratulations on an exciting season.

Pinewood wins CCS!
Pinewood faced Sacred Heart Prep today, in a familiar matchup of recent years. SHP came out strong and established a lead in the first quarter. Pinewood offense was tentative in the second quarter, with SHP ahead 21 - 15 at the half. In 3rd quarter, SHP opened with 5 more, 26 - 15. But something happened, and the Panthers found it within themselves to sharpen their offense and tighten their defense, to run the rest of the quarter 18 points to SHP's 4, ending the quarter ahead 36 - 30. In fourth quarter, the Panther's never looked back, dominating SHP 18 to 0. The game ended with Panthers 54 - 30, an amazing sight. See photo coverage here.
